Madeira is famous as the birthplace of the world-famous footballer (soccer) star Christian Ronaldo and is known as the floating garden of the Atlantic Ocean because of the vibrant flora and fauna that live there. Because of its location, it enjoys year-round warm weather with temperatures in the low to mid 20C, perfect for those who can travel any time of year. Madeira is a Portuguese Island closer to the coast of Africa, 520 km away, than mainland Portugal found 1,000 km North. Keep in mind when booking that the star-rating system in Europe isn’t the same as the five-star system in the US. ![]() US East Coast-ers pack your bags: you can get to Madeira from Boston or NYC with just a hop skip and jump, with a quick layover in the Azores (another great place in Portugal to explore). Take a 1 hour flight or two and a half hour boat ride to Porto Santo for the real sand.
